Can this ever go away? Still two years away from free agency and the New York papers can’t let it go, even as their own Knicks open their season. Mitch Lawrence takes another crack at the Lebron to New York rumors in today’s New York Daily News. Check out some of this garbage:

Walsh thinks he can get LeBron James in a Knicks uniform because he believes, A) Great players want to play in New York, and B) Great players want to play for D’Antoni, who formed a bond with James and other Olympians in Beijing.

James has to be loyal to the Cavs and say all the right things about staying, but his friends see New York in his future.

Essentially, the gist of his column is that the Knicks are clearing all the cap space they can to get him in two years. Like that is news to anyone. As annoying as that column is, what about the biggest piece of junk headline from Dime Magazine: Spike Lee: Lebron Wants to Play for the Knicks.

In an interview with the Movie director and Knicks season-ticket holder, Lee claims Lebron will end up in New York, because he told him so:

Dime: What has LeBron said to you
SL: He wants to come to New York. He told me people are putting this stuff about him coming to Brooklyn because of Jay-Z. First of all, this Brooklyn thing is no wrap. That’s not a done deal. Hova’s his boy, but that’s not going to determine where he leaves, if he chooses to do so.

That is like me saying Lebron is 100% staying in Cleveland because he told a crowd at a turn out to vote rally earlier in the month “I ain’t goin’ nowhere.” The truth is nobody knows what Lebron is going to do. Not even Lebron. So the talk is just that. Talk.

Can we just focus on basketball, please?
